My favorite part is where the author describes how he thinks that bantering is now part of his work-related duties, so he practices every day to make sure that he’s doing his job right.
This really is a sad tale, about a man who is trying to do his job the best that he can, and making many personal sacrifices along the way. He comes to the end of his life, and realizes that maybe he was serving a Lord who is not quite as gentlemanly and honorable as he once thought. He begins to feel depressed about all of the opportunities he missed and how he never really thought too hard for himself, but in the end he resolves to make the most of “the remains of the day.”
