Read April 2017 on the recommendation of Chloe Sanders.
The Good Earth is a book by Pearl S. Buck. It describes the life of a Chinese peasant, Wang Long, and of his friends and family.
I remember getting home late one night and lying in my bed in the dark, listening to the audiobook. The version read by Anthony Heald is fantastic.
I relate to Wang Long, because even though he’s a simple, uneducated peasant with both strengths and character flaws. He is selfish at times, but do you need an education to know better than to be selfish? Near the end of his life he sometimes retreats from dealing with challenging issues, and sees the error of his ways only too late.
The book was banned in China for a time, which alone might indicate that it’s worth a read.
